Record-Setting Year for Leadership Day
We had record participation at Leadership Day this year! More than 430 ACP members from all 50 states and the District of Columbia participated in Leadership Day, ACP’s annual advocacy day on Capitol Hill, held on May 14 - 15. This was the largest turnout for a standalone Leadership Day - where the Internal Medicine Meeting and Leadership Day are not held back-to-back in Washington, DC. The event had several changes this year that included new break-out sessions on advocacy skills and policy topics at the federal and state levels, and identifying ways to engage in advocacy throughout the year. Attendees also heard from key congressional members and staff and received briefings on ACP priority issues before going to Capitol Hill to meet with their members of Congress on the following legislation:
1. Step Therapy:
Co-sponsor and pass H.R.2630/S. 652, the Safe Step Act of 2023, a bipartisan bill that would require group health plans to provide an exception process for any medication step therapy protocol to help ensure that patients can safely and efficiently access treatment.
2. Primary Care and the Physician Workforce:
Co-sponsor and pass H.R. 2389/S. 1302, the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2023, which would gradually raise the number of Medicare-supported GME positions by 2,000 per year for seven years.
3. Compensating Physicians for the Value of Care:
Cosponsor and pass H.R. 6545, the Physician Fee Schedule Update and Improvements Act, that would address issues with Medicare Physician payment by raising the threshold for implementing budget neutral payment cuts from $20 million to $53 million and would provide an increased update to the threshold every five years afterwards based on the Medicare Economic Index (MEI).
