Dr. Berryman: 2022 Richard Neubauer Advocate of the Year Award Winner
Dr. Berryman has served as the Minnesota ACP chapter’s Health Policy Committee chair since 2019 and has been a member of that committee since 2017. In this capacity, especially as chair, she has been a liaison between ACP and the health policy and advocacy work. She has been especially strong in recruiting medical students to attend the ACP Leadership Day and submit applications for MN-ACP travel scholarships for the national training/conference. Her passion for mentoring more junior ACP members at the federal level through Leadership Day has allowed the MN chapter to have a strong and lasting presence at the national level with its congressional delegation. She has advocated for increased funding for state advocacy, has participated in the development of a proposal for a state legislative monitor/lobbyist and was involved in the selection process to acquire a lobbyist for the chapter. She has attended/participated in ACP’s Leadership Day event from 2016-2019 and again this year (2022). During this time, she has also served as a preceptor for medical students interested in health advocacy and brought students to meet with legislators on specific bills. This clerkship has been very successful. She has been active in advocacy for increasing mental health access, increasing health equity for COVID testing and services, study of primary care funding and state funding for ALS research. She provides biweekly updates during the Minnesota legislative session for MN-ACP members and is a liaison with the Minnesota Medical Association for an annual Minnesota Day at the Capitol which has been virtual for the past three years. Dr. Berryman’s commitment to health policy and advocacy have been especially vital in recruiting more medical students to take an interest and action in health policy in our state. She has directed coursework at the University of Minnesota Medical school to introduce medical students to health policy advocacy and engaged them in direct meetings with legislators.
