ACP Clinical Guidelines and Population Health and Medical Science Policies
ACP develops clinical guidelines to provide you with recommendations based on the best available evidence; to provide guidance when there is no evidence; and to help you deliver the best health care possible. This year, ACP published guidelines covering two important clinical topics:
    • Nonpharmacologic and Pharmacologic Treatments of Adults in the Acute Phase of Major Depressive Disorder
    • Pharmacologic Treatment of Primary Osteoporosis or Low Bone Mass to Prevent Fractures in Adults
ACP also published living, rapid practice points on outpatient treatment for COVID-19: Outpatient Treatment of Confirmed Mild or Moderate COVID-19 (Version 1). This topic will be maintained as living, meaning that ACP will monitor new evidence and update the guidelines and practice points periodically, as evidence evolves.
    Performance Measurement
ACP is working actively in the field of performance measurement because we recognize its importance in the changing health care environment and want to shape its impact on internal medicine. ACP strategically engages with important stakeholders in the measurement space to ensure that ACP-supported measures are included in value-based programs.
This year ACP published “Performance Measures for Physicians Providing Clinical Care Using Telemedicine”, which offers recommendations for ensuring proper use of performance measures while evaluating quality of clinical care in a telemedicine environment.
Over the past year, ACP reviewed approximately 40 performance measures to identify those that are scientifically valid. These measures addressed osteoporosis, depression and diabetes. Measure reviews entail a thorough assessment of each performance measure based on five criteria: Importance, Appropriate Care, Evidence Base, Specifications, Feasibility/Applicability.
