The escalating public health epidemic of firearm violence in the United States continues to grow with more Americans losing their lives to firearm injury than to motor vehicle crashes each year.
ACP has and will continue to advocate for common sense policies to help prevent avoidable firearm-related deaths and injuries. This year, ACP announced an initiative to continue to help members address this issue. As part of our efforts, a new online hub, Preventing Firearm-Related Deaths and Injuries, was created and features information, tools, and resources and includes:
Curated content from Annals of Internal Medicine consisting of special articles, position papers, original research, reviews, editorials, and multimedia resources.
A new Physician to Physician Conversations video from Dr. Sue Bornstein, immediate past Chair of ACP’s Board of Regents, providing practical tips and strategies for talking to patients about firearm safety.
A reminder for health care professionals to pledge to speak with their patients about firearm injury when risk factors are present.
Videos from the ACP and Annals of Internal Medicine Story Slam, Gun Injury: Stories of Hurt, Hope, and Resilience that capture storytellers sharing moving stories about their firsthand experiences related to firearm injury.
A summary and recording of the ACP and Annals of Internal Medicine virtual forum discussing the firearm health crisis.
The hub also links to our ongoing advocacy efforts including recent progress with the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Also this year, ACP developed a toolkit for members: Reducing Firearm-Related Injuries and Deaths, that highlights ways members can advocate for policy changes within their state.
As part of our ongoing efforts, we continue to collaborate with others to enact change, this year joining the Healthcare Coalition for Firearm Injury Prevention, and as a sponsor of the Medical Professional Firearms Safety Summit, representing over 47 medical and public health professional organizations.
As we continue to build on our efforts, visit acponline.org/firearms for updates and information.
Efforts to Fight Medical Misinformation and Disinformation
ACP is committed to countering medical misinformation and disinformation commonly spread by unreliable sources on social media, news outlets and other digital channels. ACP continues to provide and publish evidence-based scientific information regarding COVID-19, vaccines, and treatments as well as other medical topics.
New this year, we collected our efforts at ACPonline.org/misinformation to provide a quick but detailed reference to all that ACP is doing on this critical topic.
Our efforts range from weekly publishing of evidence-based scientific content in Annals of Internal Medicine, to creating educational materials and issuing public statements, to collaborating with other organizations on initiatives to mitigate the spread of dis and misinformation. Our resource offerings include our ACP and Annals of Internal Medicine forums as well as two video series developed in partnership with YouTube: “Ask Your Internal Medicine Physician” and “Physician to Physician Conversations".
We also continued to build on our collaborations working with a broad array of associations, boards and societies on several different initiatives to mitigate medical misinformation, including most recently joining the Coalition for Trust in Health and Science initiative to curb misinformation and promote science-based information.
Advancing Equitable Obesity Care
IMM2023-Obesity-Initiative-Press-Conference.jpg
This year, ACP announced the launch of a new ACP obesity initiative aimed at advancing equitable access to obesity care. ACP will use physician education, advocacy, and partnerships to advance a stigma-free culture in which patients and clinicians collaborate to prevent and manage this increasingly common chronic condition, ensure equitable access to care for patients and to help counter public misinformation about the causes of obesity, the stigma around it and the equity issues around how it’s treated.
A new comprehensive web page features links to resources in ACP’s Obesity Management Learning Hub, an Annals of Internal Medicine collection of obesity-related articles and content, including the ACP/Annals Forum on Overweight and Obesity: Current Clinical Challenges. Additional resources include information about the ACP App Library, developed as part of our collaboration with ORCHA and designed to identify the most safe, secure and effective mobile health apps to help monitor and manage health, including weight management and information on how you can support ACP in our efforts.
