Dear Colleagues,
As I look back on this year, I remain keenly aware of the complexities and constant changes within our profession of internal medicine, and in health care at large. As the landscape of health care continues to evolve and change, regardless of our practice settings, our specialty, or our varied roles in health care, as internal medicine physicians we are leaders and experts in complexity, united by our training and the breadth and depth of our knowledge and expertise. Together, we can continue to shape the future of health care by recognizing that challenges are opportunities, that changes are forks in the road that can lead us to a better health care system and that our support of each other can only serve to strengthen the community of internal medicine.
This report summarizes how ACP has worked for, and with you, over the past year. We launched a campaign to celebrate the vital role and value of internal medicine physicians and the leadership and impact of our profession, through which we are reclaiming our ‘physician’ title and reinforcing that internal medicine is the cornerstone of comprehensive health care. We launched new initiatives on firearms and obesity; dedicated efforts to combatting misinformation promoting reputable content; developed meaningful clinical information for your practice, education tools to help increase your effectiveness, advocacy for issues important to internal medicine to press legislators and regulators for changes that will increase physician payments and reduce administrative burdens. Annals of Internal Medicine continued to produce the excellent content you’ve come to expect, including the continuation of our series of forums. And we’ve made an intentional effort to look at everything we do through the lens of equity to make sure we are addressing inequitable care and providing custom solutions based on populations.
We continue to view our four strategic priorities as the foundation for all that we do to support you and the future of our profession. Despite challenges and obstacles, we remain inspired by possibilities and progress. I welcome your feedback and thank you for everything you do for your patients and our profession.

It’s time for us to shift from calling ourselves “internists” and officially claim the title “internal medicine physician,” which more clearly denotes our training, knowledge, and clinical expertise. This change would help us unify as critical thinkers who are uniquely trained to understand a multitude of diseases, connections in the body, and the patients’ social environment.
