Keeping Current on Clinical Knowledge, Ethics & Professionalism

Annals of Internal Medicine consistently ranks as one of the world's most widely read peer-reviewed journals, with more than one million page views each month at Annals.org and significant coverage of its articles in the general media. It is also the most highly cited internal medicine journal. Annals publishes a wide variety of content in various formats including original research, reviews, guidelines and commentaries relevant to clinical practice, health care delivery, public health, health care policy, medical education, ethics and research methodology.
“Annals of Internal Medicine is quite helpful in gathering the latest news and information for my research articles. I would encourage medical students and particularly residents to sign up for their scheduled emails.”
—Ali Akhtar, M.D., ACP Member, Army Medical College, Pakistan

ACP's New Visual Clinical Guidelines
With ACP's new Visual Clinical Guideline product, you can easily and effectively retain information from clinical guidelines. A Visual Clinical Guideline, created by the Division of Clinical Policy in collaboration with Publishing and Annals of Internal Medicine staff, quickly and visually summarizes:
  • The scope of each guideline (e.g., population or interventions of interest)
  • ACP clinical recommendations
  • Recommendations are shown with its strength, certainty of evidence, and rationales
Clinical considerations or items that clinicians can consider when exploring treatment options with their patients
A Visual Clinical Guideline also features a data visualization component for each ACP clinical recommendation that a user can interact with by selecting modifiable features. Visual Clinical Guideline, which is powered by GRADEpro, will also be accessible through ACP’s Clinical Guidelines app, which can be downloaded in the Apple Store or Google Play Store.

ACP Clinical Guidelines and Population Health Policies
ACP develops clinical guidelines to provide you with recommendations based on the best available evidence, provide guidance when there is no evidence and help you deliver the best health care possible. ACP has been developing clinical guidelines for nearly half a century and is the oldest clinical guidelines program in the U.S.
This year, ACP became the only U.S. organization to receive designation as a GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation Center). The designation recognizes ACP’s leadership and rigorous approach to developing trustworthy and transparent evidence-based clinical recommendations using the GRADE system.
ACP was an early adopter of GRADE, having published its first guideline using GRADE in 2007. ACP’s demonstrated dedication and capacity to teach, train and use GRADE in the development of high-quality systematic reviews and guidelines, in addition to contributing toward advancing GRADE science and methods, led to the designation.
This year, ACP published clinical policies covering 5 important clinical topics:
  • Newer Pharmacological Treatments in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes
  • Screening for Colorectal Cancer in Asymptomatic Average-Risk Adults
  • Nonpharmacologic and Pharmacologic Treatments of Adults in the Acute Phase of Major Depressive Disorder
  • Pharmacologic Treatment of Primary Osteoporosis or Low Bone Mass to Prevent Fractures in Adults
  • Outpatient Treatment of Confirmed COVID-19
    Performance Measurement
ACP works actively in the field of performance measurement because we recognize its importance in the changing health care environment and want to shape its impact on internal medicine. We understand that physicians question the value of performance measures and that performance measures represent an added burden to an already overworked and under-resourced physician workforce. ACP conducts a thorough evaluation to identify evidence-based performance measures using five criteria: Importance, Appropriate Care, Evidence Base, Specifications, Feasibility/Applicability. Based on these reviews, we strategically engage with payers and other important stakeholders in the measurement space to ensure that ACP-supported performance measures are included in value-based programs.
This year ACP published “Quality Indicators for Major Depressive Disorder in Adults,” a review of performance measures designed to evaluate quality of care for those suffering from major depressive disorder, and “Quality Indicators for Osteoporosis in Adults” a review of current performance measures related to osteoporosis.
Visit www.acponline.org/clinical-information/performance-measures for more ACP performance measure reviews.
Over the past year, ACP reviewed approximately 41 performance measures to identify those that are scientifically valid
    Medical Ethics & Professionalism
ACP’s Center for Medical Ethics and Professionalism develops policies and resources on timely issues for ACP members and the public. New ethics papers released this year include:
    • Health as a Human Right
    • Ethical Guidance for Physicians and Health Care Institutions on Grateful Patient Fundraising
    • Standards and Ethics Issues in the Determination of Death
New ACP case studies published this year draw on ethical challenges you may meet in everyday practice, teaching, and research, including:
    • “Why Can’t I Be There?” Ethics Regarding Restrictions on Visitation/Family Caregiver Presence
    • Pain Management Near the End-of-Life: What Would Mom Want?
    • Ethics, Professionalism, Physician Employment and Health Care Business Practices
The ACP Ethics Manual provides a solid foundation for our work on a range of ethical issues and links to position papers and case studies.
